Do you have external water leaking into your home?

Rainy parking lot with work truck. Rain or shine, our team is there to fix any water damage issue!

It could be a disaster if a home does not have a good drain system when storm rains will not let up. The water will continue to collect until it's pushing on your door searching for any sign of a crack to get inside. If the house is unoccupied for the duration of the storm the water can continue to leak in. A lot of times when water comes from the outside, it becomes dirty. The water can flow small particles of dirt into the crack under the door. Another example of contaminated water is sewage such as a toilet overflowing.

Here are some tips when dealing with contaminated water:

  • Don't spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas.
  • Don't turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Don't use household fans to dry the structure and spread contaminants.
  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by it.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.

Sealing your roof to prevent storm damage.

Pencil drawn background with SERVPRO van magnet Prepare your home ahead of the storm.

Your roofing seems fine until a heavy storm hits and you find leaks all over your home. The day is gloomy, you want to stay inside and watch the rain fall from the window not from inside your living room ceiling. An option that a homeowner may have is to seal their roof. Sealing a roof includes options:

  • two layers of felt
  • synthetic roof membranes
  • a polyurethane foam spray(for existing roofs)

When you seal your roof, it gives an extra protection against rain storms.

It is said that the roofing industry has suggested the felt paper as a way to help drain water away once it is behind the roof cover. The roof covering that you chose should be sealed with a membrane that is strong enough to be watertight, will stay in place if the primary roof blows off

Our team is always there to help you!

High wind warning

8/2/2019 (Permalink)

Fallen power line.

It was around 6 pm on Sunday January 28th when the lights went out. All the neighbors gathered outside to discuss what was going on. After doing some research online, it said the power would be out till 8pm. Then it said 10pm and lastly it got moved to 12am. The electric company turned out the power to work on the electric lines because the Santa Ana winds are supposed to be picking up this week. When the wind is strong enough, it can do a lot of damage. The wind is expected to be 25-35 mph and the news reported that there will be isolated gusts up to 65-75 mph that can do damage. It's important to prep for high winds because they can pick up items like trampolines and blow them into homes or they can blow unstable structure roofing off or tear trees up that can fall into homes.

Some tips you can do before the winds hit:

  • Pick up loose items around your front and back yard.
  • Inspect your roof for weak areas.
  • Check the trees around your house.
  • Reinforce doors and windows.
  • You can turn the temperature down on your fridge in case power goes out.

Cleanup up North.

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

101 freeway.

As SERVPRO of Escondido were finishing up work for the Ventura fire, the heavy rains hit. The rains in Santa Barbara were so heavy that it caused mud slides. All the burned, loose shrubs on land were easily being pushed down hills along with dirt. The homes that had survived the fire were now being taken out by mud slides. Just as we thought the crisis was over. Of course our crew members decided to stay longer to help. The only problem was the mud slides had shut down main and side roads. Our team was stuck in the hotel while the streets were being shut down left and right. All we could do was wait. Finally the storm stopped and the damage was done. Houses that we were working on were now gone. It was a very sad time for so many people, but SERVPRO of Escondido did not give up. Fire, Rain and mud cannot stop us. We found ways around the roads that were shut down and began work immediately. It is amazing to see how people come together during times of need. Our additional crew members drove 7+ hours to get to Santa Barbara, taking back routes and windy roads. It has been long working days for our crews that are up north, some are still there. We are so thankful here at SERVPRO of Escondido to have such hard working team members on our side!
