Kits to help prepare for an emergency.

11/30/2020 (Permalink)

Dog with list of SERVPRO phone numbers and locations We have multiple locations listed here and are open 24/7 because emergencies tend to happen after hours.

Some groups require additional supplies in an emergency. When packing your emergency kit, consider these groups:

Children

Children may not understand the seriousness of a natural disaster, but they need to react nonetheless. Practice evacuation and sheltering plans with children so they respond instinctively when a disaster hits. Kids should know where to find the safe room at home and know emergency contact numbers in case a storm occurs while the family is separated.

Disasters can be traumatic for children, so include comfort items and small activities in your emergency kit. Don’t forget diapers, formula, and other essentials for babies.

Older Adults

Disasters are more dangerous for the elderly. Just consider this statistic: New Orleans residents over the age of 60 accounted for 75 percent of the bodies found immediately after Hurricane Katrina, despite accounting for only 15 percent of the population. Because they tend to be less mobile and more isolated than younger people, seniors have a harder time evacuating when a natural disaster happens.

Older adults should coordinate their emergency plan with local relatives or neighbors, especially if they don’t drive. It’s important that seniors have a support network who can keep them informed during a natural disaster, and assist during evacuation or sheltering in place.

Seniors, as well as others with chronic health conditions, must pay special care when assembling their emergency kit. A natural disaster may prevent access to regular healthcare providers. For that reason, it’s important to include medical information like medications and dosages, medical records, insurance documents, and important healthcare and support system contacts.

Pets

No one wants to leave pets behind in a disaster, but if you’re not prepared, you may have no choice. Pet owners should use both collars with tags and microchips to ID pets, identify pet-friendly places to shelter, and name a backup caretaker who can step in if a disaster strikes while you’re away from home.

Include food, medications, leashes, collars with ID tags, veterinary records, and a portable pet carrier in your emergency kit so you can care for pets during a disaster.

There are many programs and resources to help in a natural disaster. But resources take time to become available, and when a disaster happens, you need to be able to respond immediately. Have a plan so your family can react quickly when a natural disaster happens. It could save your life.

How to prevent a flood in your business:

Dehus lined up for a large job. We have enough equipment to handle any size job, any hour of the day!

According to disaster safety.org some tips to keep water out of your business and prevent a flood:

Seal cracks-use high quality products to seal cracks on pipes.

Sump pump-connect sump pumps to a battery backup or generator.

Backflow valve- Install backflow valves on main waste drain pipes that leave the structure.

Protect openings- keep a supply of water-absorbent or water-filled barriers to divert water away. Install watertight shields over all doors and windows at least 12 inches above anticipated flood level. The type of barrier used will depend on the size and type of opening.

Slope- Evaluate the drainage of the property to make sure the ground slopes away from the building.

All of these tips will help to make sure your business does not experience water damage.

Did you find mold growing in your home?

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growing inside wall cavity from slow hot water leak in bathroom. Removing mold from a hot water leak!

What is mold?

Molds are simple organisms that are found indoor and outdoor. They are very small spores. The color can be anywhere from white to orange and green to black.

What does it need to grow?

To grow, mold needs food ex: leaves, paper. It also needs moisture and a place to grow.

Can you find mold in your home?

Absolutely. Sources that can cause problems for mold are flooding, leaky roofs, mud, steam from cooking, shower or bath steam/leaks, damp clothes, humidifiers.

How can you prevent mold in your home?

  • Check for moisture on windows
  • Check for wood warping
  • See if you can smell a musty odor
  • check for cracking of plasterboard

If water penetrates any of these areas, there is potential for mold growth.

All of these tips can help save you from a moldy mess!

If you suspect you have mold call:

Grease fire?! SERVPRO can help!

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

Grease fire burned through kitchen cabinets and stove top. Grease fire exploded in kitchen, SERVPRO was there to alleviate the damage.

Who knew cooking in your kitchen could turn into this? This tenant in Escondido was planning to have a peaceful dinner at the rental property before this situation occurred. It's important to always be prepared for the worst in the event that this happens. It can happen to anyone but there are ways you can be more prepared for it. Always keep clutter out of the kitchen. Wipe down all surfaces in the kitchen including floors and walls so there are no flammable spills or layers of film for the fire to catch onto easily. Keep baking soda in reach of the stove top to throw on any open flames. Baking soda cuts off the oxygen supply to a fire similar to a fire extinguisher. In the case the fire is not able to be tamed immediately call your local fire department and evacuate the premises. Always use caution when cooking and if you do experience a disaster like this, SERVPRO of Escondido will be there to clean it up for you. (760)746-6440

Sealing your roof to prevent storm damage.

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Pencil drawn background with SERVPRO van magnet Prepare your home ahead of the storm.

Your roofing seems fine until a heavy storm hits and you find leaks all over your home. The day is gloomy, you want to stay inside and watch the rain fall from the window not from inside your living room ceiling. An option that a homeowner may have is to seal their roof. Sealing a roof includes options:

  • two layers of felt
  • synthetic roof membranes
  • a polyurethane foam spray(for existing roofs)

When you seal your roof, it gives an extra protection against rain storms.

It is said that the roofing industry has suggested the felt paper as a way to help drain water away once it is behind the roof cover. The roof covering that you chose should be sealed with a membrane that is strong enough to be watertight, will stay in place if the primary roof blows off

Mold growth no more!

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Water heater stand cleaned out. Mold took over this garage water heater, our team cleaned it out and this is the finished product.

When water leaks into your home whether it's from the inside or the outside, it becomes a good breeding ground for mold to grow in, especially in high humidity areas of the home such as bathrooms and kitchens. While there is not any significant research on if mold causes any medical issues, it certainly does not smell nice. You'll notice the smell when you first walk in, it's a musty smell. Although you may not be able to see the mold, if you can smell it then it is most likely there on the inside of the walls. Lack of air circulation can cause the smell to become stronger. Keep mold from growing after a water damage by keeping humidity levels down, make sure the room gets good air circulation, and contact SERVPRO of Escondido right away to get the water mitigated before mold has the chance to grow.

Mold problem in your home?

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Mold Problem? SERVPRO is here to help. SERVPRO can remediate mold in your home.

After water damage mold growth can start in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Mold thrives in wet, warm, and humid environments above 60 percent. To avoid the transfer of mold spores from one area of a home to another our crew builds a containments around the affected area. Mold can travel through the air so the containments are important to prevent that from happening. It is important to keep walls and floors completely dry because mold can not grow in dry and harsh areas. Mold has high potential to grow in bathrooms. Promptly fix leaks and mitigate water. Also it is important to ventilate areas that experience a lot of steam such as showers, kitchen cooking areas, and laundry.

High wind warning

Fallen power line.

It was around 6 pm on Sunday January 28th when the lights went out. All the neighbors gathered outside to discuss what was going on. After doing some research online, it said the power would be out till 8pm. Then it said 10pm and lastly it got moved to 12am. The electric company turned out the power to work on the electric lines because the Santa Ana winds are supposed to be picking up this week. When the wind is strong enough, it can do a lot of damage. The wind is expected to be 25-35 mph and the news reported that there will be isolated gusts up to 65-75 mph that can do damage. It's important to prep for high winds because they can pick up items like trampolines and blow them into homes or they can blow unstable structure roofing off or tear trees up that can fall into homes.

Some tips you can do before the winds hit:

  • Pick up loose items around your front and back yard.
  • Inspect your roof for weak areas.
  • Check the trees around your house.
  • Reinforce doors and windows.
  • You can turn the temperature down on your fridge in case power goes out.

When the winds pick up, SERVPRO of Escondido is ready to help! (760)746-6440

Fire in the North.

7/30/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke filled skies in Ventura.

The fire in Venture was finally over after it charred homes and a lot of land. The fire left Ventura structures, homes, trees and more in ashes. Our SERVPRO of Escondido team headed up north about 4 hours as soon as the flames were put out. It was an overwhelming time for all who lived in the area. A lot of homes had smoke damage from the black clouds that circulated the sky for weeks. The fire may have been out but you could still smell it in the air, homes and everything in-between. Smoke leaves behind soot, a black flakey substance that can etch its way into concrete, roofs, homes, etc. Soot damages materials and paraphernalia when it settles. It is important to clean all items of smoke damage quickly and thorough as soon as possible.

SERVPRO of Escondido was able to make people feel comfortable in their homes again.

If you're dealing with the aftermath of a fire call SERVPRO of Escondido at (760)746-6440. We are here to help you in your time of need.

Cleanup up North.

101 freeway.

As SERVPRO of Escondido were finishing up work for the Ventura fire, the heavy rains hit. The rains in Santa Barbara were so heavy that it caused mud slides. All the burned, loose shrubs on land were easily being pushed down hills along with dirt. The homes that had survived the fire were now being taken out by mud slides. Just as we thought the crisis was over. Of course our crew members decided to stay longer to help. The only problem was the mud slides had shut down main and side roads. Our team was stuck in the hotel while the streets were being shut down left and right. All we could do was wait. Finally the storm stopped and the damage was done. Houses that we were working on were now gone. It was a very sad time for so many people, but SERVPRO of Escondido did not give up. Fire, Rain and mud cannot stop us. We found ways around the roads that were shut down and began work immediately. It is amazing to see how people come together during times of need. Our additional crew members drove 7+ hours to get to Santa Barbara, taking back routes and windy roads. It has been long working days for our crews that are up north, some are still there. We are so thankful here at SERVPRO of Escondido to have such hard working team members on our side!

On December 7th 2017 Southern California is hit by a massive fire, "Lilac Fire", that is continuing to burn through today December 8th 2017. We will be out at many jobs these next few days, even weeks giving all our best effort to relieve the damage that has been done from the fire and smoke. We know this is an alarming time for all of us but we are here to help. During times of devastation our business comes together stronger than ever. We have a powerful team and we will do what it takes to make this situation better for our community.

Water damage can ruin wood floors.

Did you wake up in the middle of the night to find that an area of your home was flooded? Here are some tips that can help you make sure it doesn't damage anything else close by. (For clean water situations only.)

  • Shut off the water source if possible and safe to do.
  • Mop up excess water.
  • Place wood blocks or aluminum foil under furniture legs.
  • Remove rugs from wet carpet.
  • Do not use your house vacuum to remove the water.
  • Do not leave colored items on the wet carpet, it can potentially stain.
  • Refrain from using electrical fixtures if the area is wet.

Contamination

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

Clogged rain gutters can be inviting contaminated water in your home. Prepare for the season and be sure to clean out your homes rain gutters.

It could be a disaster if a home does not have a good drain system when storm rains will not let up. The water will continue to collect until it's pushing on your door searching for any sign of a crack to get inside. If the house is unoccupied for the duration of the storm the water can continue to leak in. A lot of times when water comes from the outside, it becomes dirty. The water can flow small particles of dirt into the crack under the door. Another example of contaminated water is sewage such as a toilet overflowing.

Here are some tips when dealing with contaminated water:

  • Don't spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas.
  • Don't turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Don't use household fans to dry the structure and spread contaminants.
  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by it.
    • Wash hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.
